Vendor Spotlight: Unexpected Necessities

Hi, y’all!!  My name is Cena Evans, and I am the owner of Unexpected Necessities, the jewelry booth at The Rusty Chandelier.  I am married and have a 6-year-old little girl.  I am a full-time private school librarian, and I also work at my husband’s law office.  Selling jewelry is my fun “hobby!”   I started selling jewelry back in 2002, when I was a senior at USM.  I was about to start student teaching and could not have a job, so I started buying jewelry online to sell to my friends and family to make extra money.
Since then I have sold thousands of pieces of jewelry at local festivals, schools, and my vendor booths in Laurel. I had no idea when I started 11 years ago that I would still be selling today!

When my little girl was born in 2006, I would take her along when I restocked my booths.  Now 6 years later she is my little helper.  Somehow, though, I wound up with a tomboy who doesn’t even like jewelry!  Regardless, I hope to someday pass along my little business to her.   It won’t make her rich, but it will give her some extra money.

Customers usually ask how I pick the pieces that I sell.  I only buy jewelry that I would wear.  I am very picky, and sometimes I just don’t find a lot of things to buy.  Luckily, I have established accounts with about 15 companies, so I am able to find some great deals and pass the savings along to my customers.  I try to sell fun and trendy items as well as classic items.  I actually still wear some pieces that I bought 10 years ago.

I usually have all new items at every show, with a few re-runs of best sellers.  Here’s a sneak peek of this month’s jewelry!

Vendor Spotlight: Spotted W

Hello, my name is Cheri, and I am the owner of Spotted W - a trendy and affordable women’s clothing and accessories business on Facebook and at The Rusty Chandelier!

I am a mom to 5 wonderful children and one precious dog named Paris! I have a wonderful husband, Steve.  He has been my rock during this business adventure.

Shopping has always been a “hobby” of mine. I grew up believing that a bargain is the best kind of buy! When you have 4 boys and a girl, you need all the bargains you can get. I have always loved a good yard sale!  I used to sit every Friday and list all the yard sales by areas and then hit the road on Saturday morning at 6:00 am. I had a tradition for years of meeting my coworkers from the Laurel Bone and Joint Clinic on Saturday morning at 6:00 am. We would yard sale until about 10:00 am then hit PDI’s for a burger and fries.

For years, I have wanted to own my own business, but I never really knew what type of business I wanted to pursue. We moved to Dallas for a couple of years and then moved back to Laurel in 2010. Job hunting was getting stressful, and in the back of my mind, I kept thinking now’s the time. I kept noticing all these people using Facebook for their business, so that is where I began. Facebook after all is “free,” and that is the magic word. I jumped in and took the gamble. My first public venture was The Junkyard last fall at the Rusty Chandelier. I had no idea that one Saturday, in a $25 booth, under a tent, would change my life!  I sold so many clothes; it was crazy.  During that show, Steve left our booth for a few hours. When he called to check on me, I told him I was out of shopping bags, receipts and change! I was ecstatic to say the least.  That afternoon, I had a visit from the Junk Goddess, and I was invited into the Rusty family. The rest is history!

I have expanded my booth twice since I moved inside the Rusty. I could not be happier working with the Rusty crew!

The goal was to create a business where people could shop for clothes affordably. I have tried to keep in mind how hard it is these days to squeeze a new outfit into the family budget. I believe moms deserve a happy every now and then. I want moms and daughters to have a place to shop together where the prices are affordable and the clothes and accessories are fashionable. I hope shopping with Spotted W helps get that accomplished.  Spotted W continues to grow; I have recently started doing Trunk Shows. Trunk Shows are great way to have a girl’s night out and shop in the comfort of your own home!

People like to ask if I am opening up my own store, but I love the Rusty Chandelier and everything about it. I have developed wonderful customers and business is great. I keep thinking about the old saying “if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it”!

I could not be happier working with the Rusty Chandelier group. You will find anything and everything in this eclectic and fun place. I love my customers and enjoy seeing familiar faces every month along with many new ones.  I have become a personal shopper for some, and love it! I was missing something in my life, and I have found it at the Rusty Chandelier. Steve and I both have made so many great, genuine and honest friends while working here.  Steve now has his own booth The Vintage Roughneck. I consider my co-workers some of the best friends I have made in Laurel.

If you have not visited the Rusty Chandelier, you are really missing a truly fabulous experience. I hope you visit soon and experience the best southern hospitality around. You will find anything from clothing, jewelry, baked goods, antiques, vintage items, to plants, furniture, garden items and much much more!

I want to say THANK YOU to everyone at the Rusty Chandelier for being so kind and treating me like you have known me forever. Also, I can’t forget my wonderful customers - without you, this would have never happened “THANK YOU!”
I look forward to the 3rd Thursday every month, it does not come fast enough!

Happy Shopping!

SPOTTED W

Vendor Spotlight: Heather Spradley as Junkin' Gypsy

Hi y’all! I’m Heather, and I am one junkin’ Southern girl and the face behind “Junkin Gypsy!” In my opinion, I have the best jobs in the world! First I am a wife, and I love every inch of my sweet sweet husband! He supports me in every journey and never complains about our junky garage or my junky junky truck! Second, I am a mom to the most awesome twin girls; they make me want to pull my hair out, but they also make me laugh harder and smile more than anything in this world! Third, I am a junkin’ Southern Girl! I say I have the junkin’ disease, and it is not curable! I brake for garage sales and thrift stores even if I am already 5 minutes late! When we see one, my girls hold on tight because they know I am hitting the brakes and doing a U-Turn! A little dirt or rust definitely does not bother me, if anything it is the first thing I run to.

I love a good project, and I love to see the ugly duckling turned into a gorgeous jewel! My biggest problem is my husband has to tell me “you don’t need to keep it” way to much! I would keep everything I find because I would never sell anything I didn’t love for myself.

My mom and Aunt Paula joined me in my disease, and they are now part of the team at TRC. We three plan weekend trips and load up at 5 am in the morning and hit the road. It is always a lot of fun to see all of our goodies when we get home! Needless to say, you will rarely see me in a dress and heels anymore; my outfit of choice now is a good pair of paint splattered jeans, a t-shirt, and a southern women’s glass slipper, my flip flops!

We have been told that we are the best pickers around, and I would have to agree! Every Single one of us puts our Hearts of Junk into every piece we pick out. My passion for turning ugly ducklings into a piece of gold for my own home has turned into a passion for finding great pieces for all of our customers. I love to see a person’s face when they spot that perfect piece in my booth or a fellow vendor! I love talking to each and everyone that comes in The Rusty Chandelier and hearing what they have in store for the pieces they buy. I love my junkin life and can’t wait to see what the Rusty Chandelier has in store for the future.

The crew at The Rusty Chandelier would love to see you at our next show - always the third Thursday of every month!

Vendor Spotlight: "The Boys"

First, let us say on behalf of the Rusty Family, "Thanks", to all who visit and will visit The Rusty Chandelier. Without you we would all still be a bunch of hoarders. But with your support, we are able to let go of some things and share cool stuff we create or find along the way. In return, we make a few dollars to continue this vicious cycle of creating and finding unique stuff to fill the building.
We are brothers, Blaine and John Robert Carpenter, better known at The Rusty as "The Boys". Many stories have been told from all walks of life about the things that have inspired each to do what they do, but as Mikey, the leader and wisest of Goonies once said, "This is our time". Everything in our lives have inspired us to do what we do and brought us to be part of The Rusty Family. We see our space as a drive down Memory Street and hope that you see the same. So let us share with you some of those inspirations that brought us here and maybe you too will remember for a moment what has brought you to where you are.
Our Papaw would hook up his trailer to the truck and slowly drive through the community while we jumped off and picked up litter and in that litter was aluminum cans that we saved and got money to buy more Baseball Cards and Wrestling Magazines from TG&Y and County Market. We also worked for our Papaw in his chicken houses and made a few bucks to shop at the flea markets with our parents, buy a Slap Bracelet or pay the extra $2.00 for Speed Skates at Sunshine Skating Rink. There was nothing like hearing Huey Lewis singing Power of Love while skating around and around sporting a Mullet or Rat Tail.
As children, we visited Ropers Rocking Country a few times, which at the time was actually Showbiz Pizza. Going there, Pep's Point or Cloverleaf Mall or Hattiesburg in general was like a vacation. A "Real" vacation was somewhere cool like Fun Time USA in Biloxi or Marine Life in Gulfport. We are from Ellisville, so Laurel was our go to place for shopping and entertainment. We made frequent visits to places like Gibson's, Aladdin's Castle, Taco Casa, and the dollar theater in Downtown.
There were some movies and TV shows that also inspired us. Some movies on VHS include all Arnold Schwartznegger and Sylvester Stallone movies (especially Over The Top), The Burbs, The Goonies, The Karate Kid, Police Academy, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Big, UHF, Earnest Goes To Camp, and of course the real and only Batman starring Michael Keaton. Then there was T.V. shows like WWF's Saturday Night Main Event, Mama's Family, Family Ties, ALF, Smurfs, Full House, Step By Step, Saved By The Bell, Hogan's Family, Quantum Leap, Hee Haw, and WWF's Superstars of Wrestling where amatuers were put in the ring with the big names to be mauled and embarrassed every time. That is when you could not convince us that wrestling was fake. One infomercial done by a local celebrity was also inspiring when he would do the Leadco Shuffle. That was after Saturday Morning Cartoons on Channel 7, the only channel we had back then unless we were at Mamaw and Papaw’s house who had that funny turn dial changer box that controlled the rabbit ear antenna on top of the wood console TV. Do you the remember the Rainbow Screen after the last and until the first TV program each day? Some other inspirations were 3 Wheelers, Go Carts with no Roll Bars, striped Girbaud Shorts from Tom & Calico Cat, lunchroom pizza, Vanilla Ice, Rad Caps from Wendy’s, Funky Sunglasses from Pizza Hut, the original Nintendo, U.S.A. Basketball Dream Team, Dixie National Rodeo, McGruff the Crime Dog, swimming in cow troughs, tight rolled Jeans, Cassettes, Bean Bags, He-Man, and the freedom of having no Home or Cell Phone.
You may be thinking, “What in the world does any of this have to do with what we are doing at The Rusty Chandelier?” For us, it has everything to do with what we are doing. It is our experience in life that we look back on and see these things that were cool and fun in their own time. Today we buy, sell, and collect the same things we had back then and they are called Vintage. If the Lord is willing, we will say the same about the things of today years from now. Our hope is that you will find joy in seeing the things that each member of The Rusty Family brings to the place. So take your time, look around, enjoy your visit, and you just might find that special something you cannot live without.

Hi! I’m Anna Lawson, and I am the gal behind Lizzy Loo's at The Rusty Chandelier!

I am seventeen years old and a senior at Laurel Christian High School, and I love to create! My small business Lizzy Loo's began in the summer of 2012 when I started selling at a local salon, Simply Chic. Since then, my business has been really successful, and it’s something that I am very proud of. Not many seniors in high school are out making and selling handmade goods! Creating items for Lizzy Loo’s has become the thing I love to do most during my spare time.
I have been a part of the “Rusty Crew” since November of 2012. In my small booth, you will find all sorts of handmade hair beauty accessories: headbands, hair clips, bobby pins, and button earrings. I also like to play around with distressed and painted mirrors. The Rusty Chandelier has become such a wonderful place for creative people like myself to sell handmade, refurbished, or vintage goods.
The “Rusty Crew” is an amazing group of people, and each vendor has a special place in my heart. Kristen Spinks from Laurel Girl Designs is my “Rusty” rock! She is the first person that I really became close to throughout this journey. Without her, I think I would be clueless as to what to do. She has been so helpful and encouraging!
While shopping at the Rusty Chandelier, you can guarantee that you are always getting a great deal, and our vendors do a fabulous job of making shoppers feel welcomed and special. I really couldn't ask for a better job! There is such a sense of happiness when I see my “products” go through the check-out line! I hope to someday expand my booth to a bigger space so that I can work on bigger (and better) projects that I have in mind! I hope you all continue to shop with us because we surely enjoy seeing your faces every Third Thursday!
Lizzy Lou's is located in the Warehouse district

Vendor Spotlight: Meet The Totally Distressed Laurel Girls!

In 2006, I began drawing plans from my home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. When I started frequenting local junk stores to pick up items for my future home, I realized that I had a passion and knack for repurposing items that otherwise would get tossed to the wayside. This realization was the start of Laurel Girl Designs.
After beginning Laurel Girl Designs, I began exploring other avenues to help grow my business. I began creating colored-glass dispenser bottles with and iron or metal motifs such as crosses and fleur de lis mounted to the bottle fronts. These became a huge success at the local Loblolly Festival and a local boutique store. My venture into the bottles gave me a better sense of products sell best and how to maintain an inventory. My success with the dispenser bottles also helped me see the need to keep my prices low in order to sell more.

I consider myself to be a thrifty buyer, and my passion is to offer quality pieces for my customers without breaking the bank. My goal is to do right by my customers with the hope that they will continue to shop with me.

Anyone who knows me would tell you that I am a free-spirited gal who follows her heart and is led by faith, and faith alone is what brought me The Rusty Chandelier. When I first became interested in selling at The Rusty Chandelier, I contacted another stay-at-home mom who I thought would be interested in having a booth with me. When I called her up, she agreed to share a booth with me; this was the beginning of an amazing friendship that neither of us ever anticipated. Her junking business was called Totally Distressed, and her business was based out of her home in Petal. We combined our names, and the two of us came up with our new quirky title The Totally Distressed Laurel Girl.

Since starting at The Rusty Chandelier in August 2012, we have doubled our booth space. We consider this to be the perfect job - four high-stress work days then we have the rest of the month to buy furniture and plan for next event. Typically, our booth completely sells out, so we literally rebuild the booth every month. That gives a fresh new look each time the doors open. Every month a new theme is selected, and we will all try to include items on our booth that reflect that theme. This month the theme is The Southern Porch, so our booth will be stocked with outdoor benches, outdoor living furniture as well as our signature pieces like china cabinets, buffets, and dressers.

Britney and I both love color, and we are so excited to see the new colors coming out for 2013 are bright and bold. 2013 interior design trends are relying heavily on neutral colors like grays and creams for walls and furniture, and bold colors are being introduced with statement pieces like artwork, throw pillows, and side chairs. The 2013 color spectrum is broad; we are seeing lots of green and coral all the way to deep reds. Our goal for this year is to bring these new design trends to our customers at affordable prices!
Once an event ends, we typically give ourselves a couple of days off, and we are back on the junk trail trying to find great pieces at rock-bottom prices. We discover most of our pieces in junk stores, Craigslist, and even garage sales. Once the furniture and accessories are found, the real fun begins: painting. Typically, we live in our painting uniforms (aka our pajamas) a few days with paint from head to toe. We do our best to start moving new furniture and other pieces to The Rusty Chandelier around a week before an event. This can be the most fun but most stressful part since Brit and I typically agree on nothing!

Third Thursday mornings make all the hard work feel worthwhile; it’s amazing to see the excitement on people’s faces as they stand in line waiting on the doors to open. We will never be millionaires or famous, but the excitement The Rusty Chandelier has brought to our lives as been incredible. Also, the excitement we see on people’s faces when they find that treasure that they cannot live without is a truly priceless experience.

The Rusty crew of vendors has become my second family; they are all truly amazing and talented people, and it has been so wonderful to connect with them. Come on down to the Rusty Feb 21! You will see a lot of happy vendors and shoppers, and The Totally Distressed Laurel Girls would LOVE to meet you!

Much love to you all,

Kristen & Britney
