Vendor Spotlight: Unexpected Necessities

Hi, y’all!!  My name is Cena Evans, and I am the owner of Unexpected Necessities, the jewelry booth at The Rusty Chandelier.  I am married and have a 6-year-old little girl.  I am a full-time private school librarian, and I also work at my husband’s law office.  Selling jewelry is my fun “hobby!”   I started selling jewelry back in 2002, when I was a senior at USM.  I was about to start student teaching and could not have a job, so I started buying jewelry online to sell to my friends and family to make extra money.
Since then I have sold thousands of pieces of jewelry at local festivals, schools, and my vendor booths in Laurel. I had no idea when I started 11 years ago that I would still be selling today!

When my little girl was born in 2006, I would take her along when I restocked my booths.  Now 6 years later she is my little helper.  Somehow, though, I wound up with a tomboy who doesn’t even like jewelry!  Regardless, I hope to someday pass along my little business to her.   It won’t make her rich, but it will give her some extra money.

Customers usually ask how I pick the pieces that I sell.  I only buy jewelry that I would wear.  I am very picky, and sometimes I just don’t find a lot of things to buy.  Luckily, I have established accounts with about 15 companies, so I am able to find some great deals and pass the savings along to my customers.  I try to sell fun and trendy items as well as classic items.  I actually still wear some pieces that I bought 10 years ago.

I usually have all new items at every show, with a few re-runs of best sellers.  Here’s a sneak peek of this month’s jewelry!

  1. You have an amazing success story, Cena. Who would have thought that your simple hobby can bring you to the world of business? See, you even got help from your little one! Haha! Seriously, if you plan to pass your business on to her, make sure that you train her well. A successful business could come to wreck if it was mismanaged.
